When wealth is passed off as merit, bad luck is seen as bad character. This is how ideologues justify punishing the sick and the poor. But poverty is neither a crime or a character flaw. Stigmatise those who let people die, not those who struggle to live.

We live in capitalism. Its power seems inescapable. So did the divine right of kings. Any human power can be resisted and changed by human beings. Resistance and change often begin in art, and very often in our art, the art of words.

I don’t know how you teach our nation’s [US] history honestly without mentioning these facts [slavery] — but in the eyes of a substantial number of voters, teaching uncomfortable facts is indeed a form of liberal propaganda. And once that’s your mind-set, you see left-wing indoctrination happening everywhere, not just in history and the social sciences. If a biology class explains the theory of evolution, and why almost all scientists accept it — or, for that matter, the theory of how vaccines work — well, that’s liberal propaganda. If a physics class explains how greenhouse gas emissions can change the climate — well, that’s more liberal propaganda.

There are people in every time and every land who want to stop history in its tracks. They fear the future, mistrust the present and invoke the security of a comfortable past which, in fact, never existed.

I guess the Liberals have learned their lesson because after demanding almost no detail about the legality of Robodebt as it was happening, they now want intricate detail about something [Voice to Parliament] that’s yet to be finalized.

I think what is happening is that society is changing faster than it has, perhaps ever, and the ignorant (who are mostly conservative) cannot cope with it, so they rebel against it. This manifests itself as a hatred/disbelief/denial of all the threads that are changing: equality of women/coloured people; science; medicine; decline of religion; decrease in bigotry etc. This manifestation goes to bizarre lengths such that anything implemented, recommended or supported by anyone other than RWNJs is seen as bad and is actively opposed. It may not stop until these people are either pushing up daisies or dribbling down their shirts. The funny thing is, that their attitudes to science and medicine are aiding their own demise by preventing them from being vaccinated, wearing masks, etc.

Morrison would lie, get caught out, and then he would deny that he had lied, pretending it never happened, rarely if ever apologising for it, seemingly incapable of admitting it even to himself. It was stunning that the rebuttal of his lies with audiovisual proof did nothing to stem their number or frequency. Boris Johnson without the hair or the humour. [from ‘Bulldozed’ by Savva]

How sad it must be – believing that scientists, scholars, historians, economists and journalists have devoted their entire lives to deceiving you, while a reality TV star with decades of fraud and exhaustively documented lying is your only beacon of truth and honesty.

Fascism begins the moment a ruling class, fearing the people may use their political democracy to gain economic democracy, begins to destroy the political democracy in order to retain its power of exploitation and special privileges.

In the US, there is basically one party - the business party. It has two factions, called Democrats and Republicans, which are somewhat different but carry out variations on the same policies.
