After the thumping the Republicans received in the US midterm elections, the toddler-in-chief posted on social media, an image of a red MAGA cap with the word VETO in capitals in place of the Make America Great Again horseshit1.
Under Article I, Section 7 of the US constitution, to override a presidential veto of legislation requires two thirds of those voting in each of the House of Representatives and the Senate. In the former 290 of the 435 votes would be required, while in the Senate 67 of the 100 votes would be required2.
Currently, Democrats have 54 seats in the Senate, while the Republicans hold 44 seats, with the two remaining seats, Alaska and Mississippi, too close to be called. However, in both, the Democratic candidates have small leads3. On the assumption that both of those seats fall to the Democrats, that would give them 56 seats, 11 short of the two thirds majority needed to overcome a presidential veto.
In the House of Representatives, the Democrats currently hold 249 seats, while the Republicans hold 157. Projections are that the Democrats will win at least 258 seats, which leaves them 32 votes short of being able to overturn a presidential veto4.
Trump, in some of his now poorly attended rallies, said that people should pretend that he was on the ballot when they voted5. Guess what! They did, and voted overwhelmingly to dump Trumpism and its concomitant corruption, chaos, stupidity and war.
Given the drubbing the Republicans received at the hands of the Democrats, many of the new members are young, educated, and (for Republicans) even worse, female, it does make you wonder whether the Republican Party will survive. This is especially so if the Democrats can enact some of the policies that many western democracies take for granted, such as universal health care, paid parental leave, paid annual leave, paid sick leave, outlawing of gerrymandering, preferential voting, automatic voting registration, abortion rights, and a reasonable minimum wage. This will be doubly so, if they can wean themselves off the corporate and Zionist teat and repeal some of the most appalling legislation such as Citizens United, which allows corporate bastards like Musk to attempt to buy elections.
No doubt, if some of these were legislated, Trump would veto them. It simply remains to be seen if the Republican Party wants to survive or not. If they continue to be a rubber stamp for Trump’s depredations, then it will be unlikely to survive. If that can actually find their spines and vote to overcome the presidential veto, then they may have a chance of surviving. As the late, gay, unlamented Lindsey Graham said, before he became a Trump arse-licker: “if we nominate Trump, we will get destroyed, and we will deserve it”6.
The way to get rid of Trump and his stupidity, is for the House and senate to ‘gang up on him’ and override everything he tries, and especially release all of the Epstein files. That will force Trump to step down, flee to Russia, and allow the Republican Party to start to rebuild, perhaps into something approaching a party concerned with the wellbeing of the average American, rather than their corporate or Zionist donors. That is a big ask, I know. Given the current parlous state of the Republican Party, it is hard to imagine that Abraham Lincoln was a member of it. Nearly a decade ago, I wrote a piece comparing Lincoln’s famous Gettysburg Address and compared it to a Trump speech7. It is astonishing to compare the two speeches. Lincoln’s speech brings a lump to my throat, whereas Trump’s makes me shake my head in disbelief, that such a halfwit could be selected to run, let alone be elected to the presidency.

Thank you for setting out the facts surrounding a Veto. I think and hope that there maybe just enough Reds to grow a spine and do what is right for the USA to overcome this egregious smelly creature, and send him off to Russia along with his Body Odour especially when he shits his pants on the golf course. The Reds do need to launder themselves, if they are hopeful of being relevant in the future of the USA.
despite all of the above & the likely shenanagins cadetfuckinbonespurs will probably promulgate ‘tween now & 2028 ….. there does happen to be several delicious ironies, but in particular, that Gregg Abbott has had his job ‘stolen’ by a woman …… &, even more deliciously, ….. a Mexican. 😀
Indeed Clive. Also delicious irony was Trump calling him a RINO (Republican In Name Only). Obviously he wasn’t corrupt enough for the orange coward.
as an aside & not quite off topic, i went to see a seriously funny comedian on 5th nov in Perth, coming to an event near youse. Do yerselves a favour! 🙂 Anywhoo, he pointed out something many of us do not realize or appreciate, in particular ‘muriKans, & that being ‘the mid terms’. Oh it’s just ‘the mid terms’ MEH ….. NO it’s not ‘just’ the mid terms. It’s an election cycle every bit as important as the presidential election, as IT decides THE government! just the mid terms … pffffftttttt! 😛
addendum …. that seriously funny comedian is one Sammy Obeid. i mean, seriously, do yerselves a favour!!!
Given Congress has Constitutional control of budgets, the first thing Democrats should do in Jan is introduce multiple budget-related laws, eg to reduce taxes for the masses and massively increase taxes for billionaires; to wind back tarrifs against Canada etc; to reduce payments for Trump/Netanyahu wars; reduce taxpayer dollars flowing to Israel, etc. Then when Trump vetoes them it will be clear to even the dullest Republican voter/Magwit exactly what he thinks of them. Democrats should already have a plan but given their pathetic “leaders” in Congress it’s probably unlikely.
